Description

Fern Cottage is a house, likely dating from the 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. The external walls are constructed from local slate rubble, finished with whitewash and roughcast. The roof is thatched and hipped, featuring a rendered stack at the rear, with slate weathering and a rebuilt chimney shaft. The house is L-shaped and situated at a right angle to the road. It likely began as a two-room cottage. The left-hand room was extended into a small, one-storey wing at the front, which was raised in the 20th century. A single-storey extension was later added to the front of the right-hand room, creating an angle with the wing.

The east front has two storeys and a 1:2-window arrangement. The two first-floor windows on the right side of the main range are late 19th or early 20th century, featuring two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground and first-floor windows in the wing to the left are late 20th century two-light casements. The 20th-century addition on the right has a small gable and two-light casements. The north-facing front, which faces the road, includes two-light casements on the ground floor with glazing bars, along with 19th and other 20th-century windows.

The interior has been considerably altered and lacks noteworthy features. The roof structure displays collars halved, lapped, and pegged to straight principals.
