Description

These are a group of three cottages, dating to around 1840, situated on Marine Parade. Originally shown in photographs as three separate cottages, the building features an original central section of two storeys and five window bays, with a more modern storey added above. The front of the building is clad in slate. The first floor has five two-light windows with carved spandrels. On the raised entrance floor, there are four sash windows with intact glazing bars, and a doorway in the third bay from the right. A later 19th-century trellised iron porch extends to form a verandah on either side. Projecting three-storey wings, also dating from the later 19th century, are located on either end, featuring slate hipped roofs. The first floor of these wings incorporates splayed oriels which are slate-hung, with a plate glass window on the intermediate floor. Ground floor access is provided via segmental-headed archways leading to flights of steps up to Marine Parade. A retaining wall rises from ground level, connecting the entrances to the two side wings. This wall is slate-hung. The building is part of a larger group that includes numbers 6A, 7, 8, 8A, 9, 11, 12, and a sundial.
