Description

This is a row of three cottages, known as Fern Cottage, located on South Street. They were probably built in the 19th century but may include some earlier elements. The cottages are constructed from cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings. The roofs feature triple-roll clay tiles between high coped gables, which suggest they may have originally been thatched. There are brick chimney stacks.

The cottages are two storeys high and consist of six bays. The windows are hollow-chamfered with mullions set in wave-mould recesses, arranged as 3, 2, 2, 3, 3, and 3 lights above, with 4-light windows in the lower bays 1, 4, 5, and 6, and a 2-light window to the right of lower bay 3. The ground floor features cambered arched doorways in wave-mould recesses under deep lintels for bays 2 and 3 on the left and between bays 5 and 6. All ground floor openings have separate labels, except for the doorways in bays 2 and 3, which share a joint lintel. There is a straight joint between bays 4 and 5, and bays 5 and 6 appear to be later additions. A 20th-century casement window is present in the south gable, along with various horizontal-bar and other casement windows at the rear. There are also two single-storey scullery wings attached to the rear. The interiors have not been seen.
