Description

South Farmhouse and its front boundary walling are a detached house dated 1700. The house is constructed of ham stone with squared ashlar dressings and has a thatched roof with coped gables and stone chimney stacks, one featuring a traditional baffle. The south elevation, which faces the road at a right angle, has four bays. It features ovolo-mould mullioned windows set within wave-mould recesses, with four lights in most bays, except the lower bay one and upper bay three, which have two lights. A continuous label runs above the upper windows, extending around the west gable as a hood. All windows have rectangular leaded panes; the lower bay three has a two-light window adapted with a part-glazed door, and bay two contains a cambered arched doorway with a 20th-century door.

A four-light hollow-chamfer mullioned window in a wave-mould recess is visible in the west gable’s ground floor, likely dating to the 19th century, as evidence of a deeper opening remains in the stonework. Above this, two two-light ovolo-mould mullioned windows with separate labels are present, along with small single-light windows in the attic. At the top of this gable is a square plaque inscribed "W/RS/1700" within an elaborate border. A 19th-century lean-to was added to the north side and subsequently altered in the later 20th century.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to contain a fireplace with stone jambs and a crossbeam, plasterwork to the hall with a coved ceiling, one stone doorway with ovolo moulding, and a collar-truss roof.

A wall approximately 2 metres high extends from the southwest corner of the house along its street frontage, constructed to match the house’s materials, with thin angled coping and a simple opening for a wooden gate at its midpoint. This wall contributes to the setting of the house.

The front boundary walling is of a similar construction and height, creating an appropriate setting.
