Description
Library Cottage is an early to mid 19th century building that has undergone later alterations and additions. Originally two cottages, it was converted into one by the architect Arnold Mitchell. The cottage is two storeys high with two window bays and features a matched roof that is slate hung. It has splayed three-light bays on both the first and ground floors, with sash windows that include margin lights. Notably, there are two elegant 18th century rainwater heads, brought in by Arnold Mitchell, positioned on either side of the front. The ceilings inside were also designed by Arnold Mitchell. The Marine Circulating Library was established here in 1839. The building experienced a landslip in 1971. Library Cottage is part of a group that includes Nos 4 to 6, along with Nos 6A, 7, 8, 8A, 9, 11, 12, and a sundial.
