Description
Little Madeira, Harville Cottage, Madeira Cottage, and Benwick Cottage are a group of residential buildings located on Marine Parade, constructed between 1815 and 1935. Little Madeira was built in 1934-1935 and is designed to fit into a small space while harmonizing with its neighbors. It features two storeys and an attic, with a thatched roof and dormer. The front is weatherboarded and stuccoed, with a bow window on the right that rises through two floors. On the left, there is a sash window with three panes on the first floor, and on the ground floor, a six-panelled door framed by panelled pilasters, topped with a semi-circular fanlight and dripmould.
Madeira Cottage, built between 1815 and 1819, also has two storeys and an attic, with a thatched roof and dormer. Its weatherboarded and stuccoed front features a bow window on the right that extends through both floors. In the middle, there is a four-pane sash window above a flight of steps, which is flanked by a handrail and topped with a trellis porch that has a peaked canopy leading to a six-panelled door. To the left, there is a lower bay with a two-light casement window above and a sash window below.
Harville Cottage, constructed in the early 19th century after Madeira Cottage, has a thatched roof and a dormer on the right. The stuccoed front includes a three-light casement window with small panes above and a sash window below, accompanied by a trellised porch and a six-panelled door to the left. To the left again, there are two two-light casements with small panes above and a bow window on the ground floor.
Benwick Cottage, also built in the early 19th century after Madeira Cottage, shares the same outline and height as Harville Cottage. It has two storeys and two window bays, featuring two-light casements with small panes above and two similar windows below, each flanking a six-panelled door with the top two panels cut away and glazed.
These buildings, along with Nos 4 to 6, 6A, 7, 8, 8A, 9, 11, 12, and a sundial, form a cohesive group.
