Description

Dorset House, located at No 9 Broad Street, is a building with a core dating from the 17th century, which was refronted likely in the 18th century or early 19th century. It has two storeys and features a slate gabled roof with colourwashed roughcast cladding. On the ground floor, there is a bowed window with glazing bars to the right, and above it, a splayed bay. To the left, there is a doorway framed by panelled pilasters and a flat hood, leading to a door set in reveals. This door has a rectangular fanlight with Gothic glazing and consists of six fielded panels, with the top two panels being glazed.

Nos 10 and 10A, which are part of the same structure, date from the 18th century or earlier. They also have two storeys and a slate roof with cresting. The front is colourwashed rendered, featuring a parapet with plain capping. The premises at Number Ten has a modern shop front, while the premises occupied by Roper and Roper includes a wide doorway at the left end, adorned with a moulded archivolt and flat hood above, leading to a six-panelled door with the upper four panels glazed. To the right of this doorway, there is a four-light, two-tier window with a three-light sash above it. Further right, another doorway with a moulded archivolt and flat hood leads to a four-panelled door in reveals, and adjacent to this is a two-tier window that is four panes wide, with a sash window above it.

Dorset House, along with the Bell Cliff Retaining Wall and Railings, and Nos 4 to 10 (consecutive) and 10A Broad Street, form a cohesive group.
