Description
Uplands is a house located on Church Street in Upwey, Weymouth. It dates back to the 17th century but has undergone significant modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is set gable to the street and has been extended at the far end to connect with No. 154, which is of a later date. The original interior layout is no longer discernible. The exterior is constructed of rubble, with a rendered gable, brick stacks, and a thatched roof.
The house has two storeys and was originally designed with four windows. The entrance front now features a central two-light window at eaves level, flanked by two wide-spaced multi-pane two-light casements from the 18th century, with a central 19th-century plank door beneath a thatched hood supported by props. There is a gable stack on this side.
The rear, or garden front, has four windows with eyebrow arches on the first floor, consisting of three, two, two, and three-light small-pane casements. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window with a segmental head, a pair of French doors, and a slated outshut with glazed doors, along with a good small-pane two-light casement.
Inside, there are no remaining historical features. The staircase rises laterally to the left of the entrance, and the ceiling heights are very low. The north wall contains two deep recesses from former windows, and the first-floor windows on the garden side are made of 20th-century steel. The main fireplace features 20th-century brickwork, and there is a 19th-century grate on the first floor.
