Description

No. 18 Gilbert Road is a former farmhouse with origins in the 18th century, though it appears to have been built in two phases. The building features Purbeck Stone walls that are colourwashed, topped with a slate roof that has stone eaves courses. It stands two storeys high with an attic. The main façade shows evidence of a blocked central doorway, flanked by square bay windows that contain double-hung sash windows, which may have been added later. On the first floor, there are two additional double-hung sash windows. The house has end chimney stacks, and at the rear, the roof extends over a later lean-to structure. The entrance door is located in the gable end facing the road; it is a four-panel door with raised mouldings, sheltered by a pentice hood supported by brackets. To the east of the entrance is a later conservatory. The building has double-hung sash windows on the ground and first floors, as well as in the attic. North of the main house, there is a single-storey range with brick and stone walls and a Purbeck Stone roof, which was likely originally stables but is now part of the house. Inside, some 18th-century doors with raised panels remain. The garden is enclosed by a Purbeck Stone boundary wall.
