Description
The Old Mill House, also known as Millstones, is a Grade II listed building located on Church Hill. It features a datestone that reads "Ben Barlow Mill Wright of Southampton fecit 1754," although the building may date back to an earlier period. Currently, it is divided into two houses, with Millstones occupying the ground and first floors of the original machinery area. The structure is built with Purbeck Stone walls and roof and consists of two storeys and attics. It has a mix of casement windows and horizontally sliding sash windows, along with one dormer in the attic that has a hipped roof.
Inside The Old Mill House, the main ground and first floor rooms showcase exposed beams and joists. At the north end of the building, there is a blocked window that may be of medieval origin. In the attic above Millstones, remnants of grain hoppers and part of the sack hoist can still be seen. To the east of Millstones, the mill race and traces of the original wheel are present, which was replaced by a water turbine in the early 20th century, with some parts still surviving. The garden includes stone outbuildings, such as an open lean-to on stone piers, likely used as a cattle shelter, and a solid stone building that was formerly a donkey house.
