Description
The memorial to John Mowlem is located in the Town Cemetery and is made of granite. It stands on a square base of rock-faced ashlar and features a square spire that is set on four steps. The memorial has inscriptions on all four faces: one side commemorates John Mowlem, who died on March 8, 1868, at the age of 79; another side simply states his name; the third side honors his wife, Susannah, who passed away on November 11, 1849, at the age of 61; and the fourth side notes "John Mowlem's Vault." Additionally, it is inscribed with "H Bisson, Vale, Guernsey." The memorial is listed for its historic interest. The cemetery, which is now closed, contains many 19th-century headstones, mostly made of Portland Stone.
