Description

WEYMOUTH

SY6681SE RADIPOLE LANE, Radipole 873-1/12/503 (North side) Three monuments approximately 3m south of the porch of Church of St Ann

GV II

3 headstones. C17 and C18. Portland stone. The headstones have been reset on the W side of the path to the S porch. From the S they are: (i) a plain rectangular slab with bold lettering, to William Moulam, d.1737; underneath, in large capitals 'MEMENTO MORI'; (ii) to the N of the preceding, a very thick slab with triple curved head, to Sarah, wife of John Moulem (sic), d.1749; (iii) immediately N of the last, a thick slab with rounded head, and moulded edge to a sunk panel. To Edward Bealle, the sone of Jeremiah Beale (sic), d.1694, and Mary, his wife. The churchyard contains many monuments, these being some of the earliest. They suggest some difficulties on the part of the masons in spelling, or in erasing errors cut into the stone. The 3 headstones are prominently placed on the approach to the church porch.
