Description

The Fooks, Mackenzie, and Walis monuments are three headstones located approximately 3 meters northwest of the Church of All Saints in Weymouth. They date from 1681, 1769, and 1832, and are made of Portland stone. The monuments are arranged in a straight row, with the nearest one about 3.5 meters from the northwest corner of the church tower, covering a total span of approximately 2.5 meters.

From south to north, the first monument is to James Mackenzie, who died in 1769. It features a bold scrolled head that embraces a modelled upper part adorned with putti, a skull, and bones, with the inscription displayed on a plain panel below. The second monument is to John Isles Fooks, who died in 1832. This is a plain round-headed stone with a clear inscription. The third monument is to Elizabeth, the wife of Henry Walis, who died in 1681. This stone is thick and showcases bold high relief carving of a skull with a heart in its mouth, flanked by cornucopiae and leaf decoration. It has slightly raised margins, a flat segmental top band supported by square responds to side pilasters, and a sunk panel filled with an inscription in capitals, which has irregular spacing. The head band bears the motto "O DEATH WHERE IS THY STING," which has been scratched over in recent times. This stone is partly sunk, and the inscription may continue below ground; it is noted as the earliest in-situ monument identified in the churchyard.
