Description

St Ann's Church Room is a church room that was formerly a school building, dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble with Portland ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The building features a single space schoolroom with a dividing partition, a bellcote, and a porch.

On the street side, there are small casement windows with recessed hollow-mould stone mullions and flush surrounds, arranged in groups of three, one, and two lights. Between the first two windows is a coped gabled porch with a saddle-stone and kneelers with gablets, above a pointed arch with a label mould; the former doorway is partly blocked, with glazing above it. Both gables are coped and have gableted kneelers, and most of the ridge cresting is intact.

To the right of the building is an external stack with an octagonal shaft on a moulded base and capping, while to the left is a gabled and stepped bellcote. The left gable end has a blocked oculus above a three-light casement with a transom, and a plank door with a segmental pointed head to the right. The rear features a two-light casement with cast-iron diagonal panes at the southern end, along with a small original gabled wing and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension.

Inside, the church room has four bays with braced collar trusses and one purlin, all on a boarded floor. The original plank door with chamfered framing is located inside the porch, and the glazed transverse room divider remains in place. This building is a characteristic example of its type and is situated directly opposite the Church of St Ann and the Manor House, having undergone very few alterations since its original construction.
