Description
The Grant and Thorne monuments are two chest tombs located north of the Church of St Ann in Weymouth, dating from the early 19th century. They are made of Portland stone.
The first tomb is dedicated to Archibald Grant, who died in 1805. It features a flat ledger top on a second flat slab, with plain square corner pilasters that contain inscription panels surrounded by incised detailing. The inscriptions are carved in fine Roman lettering, and the monument has plain end panels and a simple base that is partly sunk into the ground. This monument is partially overgrown with ivy.
The second tomb, located approximately 1 meter southeast of the first, is dedicated to Joseph Swafield Thorne, who died in 1846. It also has a flat ledger top on a second slab, but this one has a triple reeded edge and reeded corner pilasters. The inscription panels have sunk margins and inset corners embellished with leaf motifs. The base is moulded and sits on a platform.
These two nearly identical monuments stand out in a churchyard where most memorials consist of simple headstones.
