Description
Alma Cottage and Pump Cottage are a pair of semi-detached houses, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, and possibly incorporating earlier fabric. They are constructed of squared rubble with a thatched roof and a brick ridge stack. The buildings follow a 2-unit plan. A flat-roofed extension has been added to the rear.
The exterior presents two storeys and four windows. Alma Cottage has two 2-light wood casement windows with horizontal bars at the eaves, one above the ground floor, in deep reveals, to the right of a panelled, part-glazed door with three transverse stone steps leading to a landing. The left gable features a replica 2-light casement at first-floor level, and the rear has two 2-light casements set into the eaves, offset from the front. Pump Cottage has two 2-light, early 19th-century casement dormers with traces of leading set into the thatch, above wood lintels over early 19th-century 16-pane sashes and a central plank door with a glazed panel. There is a slight plinth, and a raking buttress has been added to the right-hand end. The right gable includes a small casement window to the attic above a 20th-century 2-light window; a small gabled wing with a slate roof was added to the right in the later 19th century.
The interior was not inspected. The name derives from a former parish pump, which was originally located nearby but is now relocated across the road at the junction with Radipole Lane.
