Description
This group of five headstones, located approximately 10 metres south of the aisle west window of the Church of St Andrew in Weymouth, dates from the early to mid-18th century, with inscriptions ranging from 1756 to 1770. The monuments are arranged in two pairs, about 2 metres apart from north to south, with a single headstone approximately 2 metres to the east between the pairs.
From north to south, the first headstone is early 18th century and unidentified, with illegible inscriptions and three well-carved cherub heads beneath a shaped top above a flush panel. The second headstone, immediately south of the first, is 18th century, featuring a shaped head with scrolls, a carved skull, trumpet, and torch, above a flush panel with no legible inscription. The third headstone, about 2 metres south of the second, is dedicated to Richard Lewis, who died in 1761, and has a shaped top with scrolls above a carved book and other symbols, including an angel. The fourth headstone, immediately south of the third, is very wide with a shaped top and inscriptions that cover most of the surface, with the earliest decipherable memorial being to Joseph Wallis, who died in 1770. Finally, the fifth headstone is a small monument to Richard Johnson, who died in 1756, located approximately 2 metres east and centred to the previous pairs, also featuring a shaped top.
