Description

The Mawer Memorial, located approximately 20 metres south-west of the tower of the Church of St Mark, is a Grade II listed memorial dedicated to Robert Mawer, who died in 1854, and his wife Catherine, who died in 1877. The memorial is constructed from ashlar and carved stone. It features a shaped podium with a stepped circular base that is supported by console brackets. Atop this base are two almost life-sized angels who are draping an inscribed column with a garland of flowers; the column is topped with an urn, although half of the urn has split away. The base also includes inscriptions dedicated to Elizabeth Scriven, Robert's mother-in-law, and her daughter Elizabeth.
