Description

Harrison's Houses, also known as Harrison's Almshouses, are located on Raglan Road in Woodhouse and were built around 1840, with possible late 19th-century additions and a restoration in the late 20th century. Designed by John Clark, the buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone dressings and a slate roof.

The structure features two storeys and basements, with an 11-bay front and rear wings that form a U-shape, all designed in a Tudor style. The central entrance has a pointed arch and modern glazed doors, situated at the base of a three-storey tower that includes a crenellated oriel window and a three-light mullioned window above. The tower is topped with a battlemented parapet and flanked by chimneys. The outer bays of the building project forward and are gabled, while the flanking bays are also gabled. The windows are stone mullions with top-hinged casements, and there are hoodmoulds above the first-floor gable windows. Additional architectural details include stone string and eaves courses, gable copings, and ridge stacks on either end, with a rebuilt stack at the left end.

At the rear, which faces a courtyard, there is a chamfered pointed arch entrance and a stair turret on the right. The modern house doors have overlights and are set in original openings, although the window frames have been replaced. The left return of the building has three storeys and five bays, with the upper storey on the centre and left having been rebuilt.

The property also features subsidiary elements, including railings on a low ashlar wall that connect to the outer bay corners. These railings have plain square-section standards and rails topped with bud finials. The rear wall to the courtyard has ramped stone coping and is battered twice.
