Description

The Memorial to Queen Victoria is located in Woodhouse Moor, Leeds, and was completed in 1903 by the sculptor George Frampton RA. The memorial features a base and pedestal made of Portland stone, adorned with bronze figures and a frieze. It is approached by four stone steps. The front and rear of the plinth have mouldings, while a continuous frieze displays the words 'INDIA', 'AUSTRALIA', 'CANADA', and 'AFRICA' on scrolled plaques, which are flanked by owls and symbolic foliage.

The tall plinth showcases the royal arms carved in deep relief on the front, and on the rear, it bears the inscription 'RAISED/ BY/ VOLUNTARY SUBSCRIPTION/ OF /CITIZENS/ OF/ LEEDS/ IN THE YEAR/ 1901'. Niches on the sides of the plinth contain seated statues of 'PEACE' on the left and 'INDUSTRY' on the right. The statue of Queen Victoria is depicted enthroned in her coronation robes, with a radiant sun behind her throne. Below the statue, the plinth is inscribed with 'GEO FRAMPTON RA 1903'. Originally, the statue was located in Victoria Square outside the Town Hall and was unveiled on 27 November 1905 before being moved in 1937.
