Description
Magnolia House is a pair of houses located on the south side of High Street, dating from the 18th century, possibly on the site of an earlier building. The structure features Purbeck Stone walls and roof, with brick stacks. It is a large house positioned at right angles to the High Street, with a U-shaped plan that includes projecting wings at each end of a recessed central section. The building has two storeys, plus attics and a basement.
The projecting wings have half-hipped gables, each featuring a three-storey canted bay window with stone mullions and double-hung sash windows that extend into the gables. The central section has two entrance doors at ground floor level, accessed from a raised landing above the basement. This area is covered by a canopy supported by timber columns, with corrugated plastic roofing that likely replaced glass. The ground and first floors have double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The elevation facing High Street has two storeys, attics, and a basement, with two double-hung sash windows on the ground floor and three similar windows on the first floor, one of which is now blocked. There are two dormers in the attic with hipped roofs.
Inside, the building retains several original panelled doors, and No 133 features a cut-string staircase with simple balusters and a carved wreathed handrail. To the south of No 131, the former stables and coach house has Purbeck Stone walls and a modern pantiled roof. The property also includes a stone wall and gate piers along High Street, with modern iron gates. Magnolia House is considered a significant building within the street.
