Description

The United Reformed Church, originally built as a Congregational Chapel in 1837, is a notable building located on the north side of High Street. It was designed by George Gollop of Poole, with a large extension added to the east in 1901-1902 by Tom Stevens of Bournemouth. The original structure is made of Purbeck Stone rubble, featuring a central projecting section in ashlar, with a roof concealed behind a parapet.

The projecting center has two ground floor doors with semi-circular heads, carved with the dates "Built 1705" and "Rebuilt 1837." On the first floor, there is a semi-circular headed window, while the side sections include double-hung sash windows on both floors. Inside, the church retains a panelled gallery around three sides, supported by cast iron columns, and it is currently used as a hall. The pulpit from the original building has been incorporated into the newer extension.

At the rear of the original church is the old schoolroom, believed to be one of the earliest day schools in Swanage, featuring simple wall panelling. The later extension is also constructed of Purbeck Stone and is designed in a Gothic Revival style. Its main south front, facing High Street, has a central nave section that projects beyond the aisles, which end in single-storey porches with parapets. The center section features a four-light square-headed traceried window on the ground floor, above which is a large Perpendicular style window.

The church is set back in a forecourt with stone paving, bordered by a Purbeck Stone boundary wall with stone gate piers and iron gates, making it a prominent building in the High Street.
