Description
Waddock Farm House, located at Waddock Cross, is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the early 18th century. It was altered and enlarged around 1797, during which the main entrance was moved from the north side to the south front. The building features brick walls and a thatched roof, with brick stacks that have oversailing courses. It stands two storeys tall, with attics and cellars.
The original layout was rectangular, with small projecting wings at each end of the south front and a lower service wing on the west side. In the 1797 alterations, the south-east wing was enlarged, the service wing extended to the north, and an additional service block was added at the south-west angle. These changes disrupted the original symmetry, resulting in a picturesque and irregular composition.
On the north facade, there is a flush panel door slightly west of its original central position, relocated to accommodate an altered staircase. The ground floor features two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, while a plat band runs at first floor level. The first floor has three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, with recessed panels between them and moulded brick corbels at the top. There is one dormer in the attic.
The south facade, now the main entrance front, has two unequal projecting wings. The east wing, rebuilt in 1797, includes a square bay window on the ground floor with double-hung sashes and glazing bars, and a plain double-hung sash with glazing bars above. Next to this wing is a timber porch with a moulded panel door. The west wing has one double-hung sash window with glazing bars on the ground floor and an altered window on the first floor, along with a plat band at first floor level.
The west elevation features the service wing, which has one storey and attics, with two blocked doorways on the ground floor and two modern metal casements. The attic contains two half-dormers, one of which has cast iron lights. Inside, there is a large 18th-century staircase with a trellis-type balustrade. The property is enclosed by a brick boundary wall along the road, with brick gate piers topped with stone moulded caps and ball finials.
