Description

Merry Hill Barn, along with an attached shelter-shed and yard walls, dates from the 18th century and was restored in the 20th century. The barn features rubble-stone walls with stone quoins and a half-hipped thatch roof. There is a porch entrance on the south side with projecting jambs and no doors, leading to a through-entrance at the center. The roof structure includes original tie-beams with renewed queen-struts, and there are plank doors on each gable end. The shelter-shed, located 20 meters south of the barn, uses the yard wall as its back wall and has rounded corners. It is supported at the front by five round oak posts with a scarfed plate, and four square posts are positioned inside, halfway to the back wall. The shelter-shed also has a thatch roof. The attached rubble-stone walls with vertical coping-stones connect the barn to the shelter-shed, leading to an entrance to the yard. The wall then curves back to form the west side of the yard and returns to the west gable of the barn.
