Description

Rodden House is a large detached house built in the early 18th century. It features grey ashlar stone walls with rusticated quoins and a projecting central bay also adorned with rusticated quoins. The building has a central pediment topped with a wooden modillion cornice. The side walls are constructed of rubble stone on the left and ashlar on the right, all beneath hipped slate roofs. There are brick stacks on the left rear hip and a combination of brick and rusticated stone at the right-hand ridge.

The house stands two storeys high with cellars and attics, and it has three sash windows with thick glazing bars. Each window is framed by moulded stone architraves, projecting dropped keystones, and stone cills supported by two consoles. The front doorway is centrally located and features a round-headed architrave with projecting imposts and a keystone. The outer framing consists of plain pilaster strips with shallow volutes that support a moulded cornice. The door itself is flush-panelled at the bottom with six glass panels above, topped by a semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars from the 18th century.

On the north side wall, there are three-light stone mullions with hollow chamfers and rounded labels over the ground floor. Above, three-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars are present. The doorway on this side has a projecting stone key at the centre. The front garden is enclosed by a stone sleeper wall, featuring a pair of low rusticated gate piers with imposts and pyramidal caps. Iron railings top the sleeper wall, with a central iron gate that has spear finials and urn finials at the intersections.
