Description

Hembury Mill is a grist mill dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of limewashed stone rubble with a Welsh slate roof featuring gabled ends. The building is rectangular in plan, with a water wheel on the east side and outshuts attached to the north and south sides.

The south front has an outshut with a lean-to slate roof to the left, and a loading doorway to the right. The north elevation features outshuts with lean-to slate and corrugated-iron roofs. A large iron undershot water wheel is situated on the east side. Hembury Mill Cottage is attached to the west side.

Internally, the floors are supported by timber beams and joists, and the roof features a staggered tenoned-purlin structure. Original mill machinery remains in situ, including millstones, grain bins, and sack hoists. Hembury Mill is a good example of a small grist mill, retaining its 19th-century machinery.
