Description

Brinkburn Mill is a mill and attached miller's cottage, likely built in the 18th century, incorporating re-used medieval masonry. The mill was remodelled, and the cottage was added around 1830. It features squared stone construction, except for squared rubble at the rear of the mill, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is designed in a Neo-Tudor style and has an L-plan layout.

The east elevation is divided into two parts. The mill on the left has two low storeys and two bays, with central boarded double doors in a chamfered surround and a smaller doorway near the left end. It has two-light recessed and chamfered mullioned windows with lead-latticed casements. The left end gable is coped and supported by moulded kneelers, and there is a stepped ridge stack. To the right, slightly set back, is the gable end of a taller single-storey cottage featuring a three-light mullioned window under a hoodmould and a slit window above. This gable is also coped and has a finial on moulded kneelers. The left return of the mill displays an external six-spoked iron undershot waterwheel, measuring 3.5 metres in diameter. The right return of the cottage has a projecting gabled porch with a tall pointed arch and a four-light window to the left. The rear elevation of the mill includes two two-light windows in gabled half dormers, while the projecting gable end of the cottage on the left has a stepped projecting stack and a two-light window on the right return.

Inside, some stones and mill machinery remain in situ, and the building features a king-post roof.
