Description

The New (Corn) Mill is a mill building dating from around the mid-19th century, with a row of two attached cottages that were altered in the early 20th century when they were converted from stabling. The structure features rendered granite rubble walls and a cement washed slate roof with gable ends. There are rendered brick stacks, one axial and the other offset towards the right-hand gable end. The mill building forms a cross wing at the left end of the attached cottages.

Originally, a mill wheel was attached to the front wall of the mill but is now off its axle. The left-hand cottage appears to have one main room at the front, likely with a smaller service room behind, while the right-hand cottage has two main rooms. There is a passage between the mill and the adjoining cottage. The building is two storeys high, with the mill forming a slightly projecting gable fronted wing that has an overshot water wheel on the ground floor front wall and a loading door above it.

The cottages have a four-window front, featuring two-light early to mid-20th century metal frame casements with leaded panes, and the first floor centre window has a semi-circular head. The ground floor includes a through passageway to the extreme left adjoining the mill, an early to mid-20th century plank and part-glazed door with a window to the right, another identical door to the right of centre, and two further windows to the right. Ground floor openings have vestigial drip-moulds above them. An old metal pump is attached to the front wall at the far right of the building.

Inside, the mill machinery remains virtually intact, made by Beare of Newton Abbot, and includes wooden and iron worm wheels, shuttles on the first floor, and two mill stones.
