Description
Hope Mill is a mill and cottage located in Clifton Upon Teme, dating from the 17th century and early 19th century, with restorations from the 20th century. The structure is built of brick and timber-frame with rendered infill and has a plain tile roof. The mill is situated to the right, while the miller's cottage is to the left, featuring a large rubble stack that is enclosed by an extension.
The cottage is one storey with an attic, which is illuminated by a 19th-century gabled dormer. It has two 20th-century casement windows located in one structural bay, with the right-hand window positioned in a former doorway. The cottage has a square panelled timber-frame on a 20th-century concrete plinth and a large end brick stack to the left, now enclosed within a lower hipped extension that has an open front.
The mill is positioned at right angles to the cottage and stands 2 and a half storeys tall, featuring a gabled roof with exposed trusses. Its irregular fenestration includes three-light casements with segmental heads. There is a stable door to the left, which bears graffiti, including a date of 1826. The mill wheel is overshot and inscribed with "J Wyer 1853," measuring about 6 meters in diameter. The interior retains most of the original machinery, including two pairs of stones.
