Description

BRINKBURN BRINKBURN PRIORY NZ 19 NW 10/76 Wall on north side of former mill race, to south-east of Manor House GV II

Wall bounding former mill race, which utilised the monastic main drain. Medieval with later patching. Squared stone. 120-metres long retaining wall, c.3 metres high; at west end a short return with moulded coping has low segmental arch to covered section of race. Near west end of main wall is a W segmental arch into an open walled pit possibly a latrine associated with the monastic infirmary. At east end links to south-west corner of Brinkburn Mill (q.v.) and steps south, with low arch across race, to end in a short length of more massive walling protecting the mill from river erosion.
