Description
Hembury Mill Cottage is a mill cottage dating from the early 19th century, though it may have earlier origins. The building is constructed of limewashed stone rubble and features a Welsh slate roof with gabled ends, along with rendered axial and gable-end stacks.
The cottage has a rectangular plan with four cells and is attached to a grist mill on the left (east side). It stands two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical north front with three windows. The windows are three-light casements with glazing bars and timber lintels, and two of the ground floor windows are topped with cambered brick arches. The doorway is located to the right of centre and features a plank door with a simple flat canopy above it. There is also an outshut on the left with a lean-to slate roof.
Inside, the cottage remains largely unaltered and retains its original features, including panelled doors, cupboards, fireplaces, ovens, and stone flag floors. This makes it an unusually well-preserved example of an early 19th-century mill cottage.
