Description
Keats Mill is a small grist mill with a waterwheel, likely built around 1865, as indicated by the date on a nearby house. It is constructed from exposed local stone rubble and has a slate roof. The building is a small, single-cell structure facing east and is terraced into the hillside, with a disused mill leat on the left (south) side. A contemporary cartshed is located at the right (north) end. The mill stands two storeys high and features an irregular two-window front with original casements that contain rectangular panes of leaded glass, some of which have repairs. The front doorway is positioned to the right of centre and retains its original plank door. The gable-ended roof slopes down from the mill to the cartshed, which has an open end. On the left (south) side, there are remains of the cast iron-framed waterwheel, which was either breast shot or overshot, although the leat is now disused.
Inside, the mill is well-preserved, with plain original structural carpentry. The ground floor room has a stone flagged floor and houses the gearing. On the first floor, there is a single set of grindstones along with bins and other milling equipment. Keats Mill was last operational in 1944.
