Description

The wellhouse and boundary walls to the school in Buckland St Mary, dated 1876, are constructed from random rubble chert stone with Ham stone quoins and coping, topped with a stone slate roof. The wellhouse is a single-storey structure with one bay, set gable end on, featuring a date stone in the apex and a moulded semi-circular headed opening with a hoodmould and face terminals. It has a splayed base and a brick barrel vault roof. Above an octagonal stone with a central tap and a drain below, there is a recessed rectangular plaque without an inscription.

To the left of the wellhouse is a drinking trough made of buff bricks with blue glazed brick coping. The boundary walls, which incorporate the rear wall of the wellhouse, extend about 60 meters in length and stand one meter high. They feature hit-and-miss coping and moulded coping where they rise to the gatepiers. The gatepiers have gabled tops, quoins, a fillet to the arris, and a chamfered plinth. The tap is likely a 20th-century replacement of the original, more elaborate structure.
