Description
The lych gate at the south entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary dates from around 1860 and is likely designed by Benjamin Ferrey. It features an exposed timber frame construction set on chert random rubble walls. The roof is a plain clay tile hipped design with deep eaves that are open at the gable ends and includes modillion sprockets. The structure has a single bay with king posts and arch braced struts resting on a low wall. The opening is cusped, with double wooden gates that have decorative hinges. Inside, there is a 3-bay arch braced queen post roof, which is inscribed with the words, "Open me the gates, that I may go into them, and give thanks unto the Lord."
