Description

The School, built in 1851 and enlarged in 1883, is a school located in Buckland St Mary. It is constructed from chert stone random rubble with stone dressings and has plain clay tile roofs with coped verges. The building features a large lateral stack positioned at the center right of the facade. The layout is not entirely clear without an internal inspection, but it is believed to have a two-storey west end with a single-storey porch and full-height classrooms, along with an additional classroom at the east end. The building is one and a half storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows: two in the first bay, one in the second, two in the third, and two in the fourth. All windows are stone mullioned. The three central bays have Tudor arch heads, while the others have square hoods. There are two 2-light windows in gabled dormers on the left and a 4-light window below. The roof extends as a catslide over a timber-framed porch. To the left of the external stack, there is a full-height 3-light mullioned and transomed window with an arch-headed niche containing a bell. To the right, a full-height 6-light mullioned and transomed window projects through the eaves with a gabled top, and a smaller 6-light mullioned and transomed window is also present. In the lower roofed addition, there are two 2-light windows, and the east gable end features an elliptical window and a quatrefoil opening. The school was built at the expense of the Rev E J Lance, the incumbent at the time. Although it is not listed among the works of architect Benjamin Ferrey, who designed St Mary's Church, he may have been consulted during its construction.
