Description

The milestone located at Newtown in Buckland St Mary is an early 19th-century structure that has been resited at an angle against a wall in the late 20th century. The stone is of unidentified material, with its exterior face incised with "Ilminster 6." The reverse side features a cast iron 'T'-shaped plaque with raised lettering that reads "Honiton 10 1/2." Notably, a gap has been left in the wall to allow small animals and kneeling pedestrians to read the milestone, which is an unusual arrangement. The road connecting Honiton to Ilminster was initiated by the Trust of that name in 1807.
