Description

The War Memorial, located on Yeates Road in Fortuneswell, was built around 1920 and is constructed from Portland ashlar. It features a square tapered shaft that culminates in a pyramidal finish, standing on a lofty pedestal and base. The memorial is set within a gravel bed enclosed by a dwarf wall. The plinth measures approximately 2.2 meters square and has a small paved area on each face, made from rock-faced Roach stone. This stone supports a moulded pedestal that rises to about 2.8 meters.

A band of vertical flutes separates the ovolo and cavetto base of the shaft from a broad scotia and torus above the main inscription area, which is positioned just below eye level. Each face of the memorial is adorned with a wreath featuring a central blank circular face, carved between the flutes and inscriptions. Additional inscription panels are centrally placed over the rock-faced plinth. All names are inscribed in fine Roman lettering of a uniform size. The entire monument, dramatically situated at the top of the northern scarp slope, exudes a quiet and dignified character. There is no signature from a sculptor or any other artist on the memorial.
