Description

The War Memorial, located on the west side of Durham Road, was designed in 1921 by J W Spink of Kingston-on-Thames. It is a stone cenotaph featuring a square rusticated ground floor chamber that serves as a plinth for the main section. This main section displays a heroic-sized bronze relief of a classical warrior, framed in an Ionic order. Above the cornice and central pediment, there is a raised blocking course in two stages; the front part is plainer and higher, while the back part has a coved step and fasces moulding. The motto "ORS JANUA VITAE" is inscribed below the relief. The signatures of the sculptor R H Goulden and the founder A B Burton are also present.
