Description
The Church of St George, built in 1899 and designed by architect Stephen Piper, is a notable structure located on Durham Road. It is constructed from rusticated snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a very tall nave with passage aisles in the Arts-and-Crafts lancet style. The church has a south-west saddleback tower with angle turrets and a matching north-west porch. It includes two wide nave bays and two gabled transept bays of equal width, along with a long, tall chancel that has low aisles and a half-octagonal south vestry projection with mullion-and-transom windows. The windows of the church are either grouped or stepped lancets.
Inside, the church presents a lofty, plain, and dignified atmosphere, with ashlar and plaster finishes. The wood barrelled roof is supported by braces that rest on stone corbels. The woodwork and metal fittings are of good quality, and there is pleasing stained glass in the east and west windows as well as in the south aisle.
