Description
The Shipley Art Gallery, built between 1914 and 1917 and dated 1915 on the frieze, was designed by Arthur Stockwell. This building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof in an adapted classical style. The prominent porch, which is one tall storey, has rusticated side walls and is supported by four Corinthian columns in antis. The entablature above includes a modillioned and dentilled cornice, topped with a central balustraded parapet. On either side of the porch, taller plinths hold life-size sculptured groups representing teachers and children. Inside the porch, arcading frames a central window and flanking doors.
The gallery also includes one-storey, bow-ended side wings that feature quoins, an entablature, and a balustraded parapet. The design of the tall central and lower wings is echoed in the main spaces behind, which are similarly detailed with pilasters, an entablature, and balustraded parapets.
