Description
The Bromley War Memorial, located on St Martin's Hill, was designed by Sydney March and completed in 1922. It features a square obelisk made of Portland stone, which stands on a two-stage base with three steps. The obelisk is adorned with bronze allegorical figures on three sides, while the rear displays a bronze cartouche. Bronze panels on all sides of the plinth list the names of those who died. The central figure represents Victory, depicted as winged and holding a wreath, flanked by Liberty with a torch and Peace, who scatters flowers of remembrance from her lap. A similar design was also erected in 1922 at Radcliffe, Greater Manchester. Sydney March, who lived from 1876 to 1967, came from an artistic family in Yorkshire and created several significant war memorials, including the Lancaster monument in East Sheen Cemetery, also completed in 1922.
