Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at 194 Bromley High Street, is a bank building constructed in 1927 by the architects Gunton and Gunton for the National Provincial Bank. It is designed in a florid Neo-Georgian style, featuring handmade variegated red brick with Portland stone dressings and a slate roof with a brick and stone chimneystack. The building sits on a wedge-shaped site and consists of a two-storey office building with attics, which has three windows on the front, and a single-storey banking hall with three windows behind.

The front building has a hipped roof with a dormer that has a curved pediment. It features a parapet with stone balustrading panels and Portland stone urns at the corners, along with a deep modillion cornice. Full-height engaged Corinthian piers are present at the corners. The first floor showcases 12-pane sash windows with curved architraves and keystones, while the ground floor has taller windows with glazing bars only in the upper part, each with a keystone and brick panels above and stone panels below. The central doorcase has a curved open pediment with a scrolled cartouche above the keystone, which is inscribed with the date 1927. It is flanked by engaged columns with plumed capitals, a rectangular fanlight, and double doors with three fielded panels each.

The left side elevation is curved, featuring a panelled parapet, one 8-pane sash window on the first floor, and an elaborate cartouche on the ground floor. The banking hall at the rear has three 18-pane sash windows with panels above and a plinth. Inside, there is a central circular vestibule with a black and white marble floor, pilasters, a cornice, and a ceiling designed with ovolo moulding and fasces. The original doors have bevel-edged glass panels, with those leading into the banking hall curved to align with the vestibule's shape. The rectangular banking hall includes a cornice, pilasters, a marble floor, and likely original counters.
