Description
The war memorial, built in 1921 by an unknown designer, is made of Portland stone. It features a tall, tapering pedestal set on a stepped base, surrounded by a paved area with twelve stone posts linked by chains. The upper part of the pedestal has fluted sides with a single leaf at each end, and wreaths are displayed on plain panels at the front. Above a heavy cornice sits a tapering sarcophagus on a moulded base, which includes two ring handles on each main side and a scrolled cover with volutes at the top. The front of the pedestal is inscribed with "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," while the sides bear the dates 1914 - 1919 and 1939 - 1945. The National Inventory of War Memorials notes that a cenotaph in Enfield was unveiled by Lieutenant General Sir Francis Lloyd on 30 October 1921, containing a capsule with copies of The Times, The Enfield Gazette and Observer, an autographed list of members of the Enfield Patriots' Committee, and coins of the realm. This memorial is a handsome and dignified example of Neoclassical design, inspired by Lutyens's Cenotaph of 1919, and is well-placed along the roadside.
