Description
The Britannia Inn is a mid to late 19th-century inn located on Fortuneswell in Portland. It features a rendered exterior and a slate roof, with a long L-shaped plan that includes a main block facing Hambro Road. The building stands three storeys tall with a basement and has a two-windowed design.
On the second floor, there are 4-pane sash windows set in a plain band, with blocked ends to the cills. Above these, there is a deeper 4-pane sash window that has a moulded architrave and cornice, along with a plain cill. The ground floor retains its original part-glazed front, supported by rusticated pilasters that carry a full-width fascia above a wide 5-light window, which is flanked by two painted panels. To the left, there is a 19th-century part-glazed door with a plain overlight, and to the right, a blocked doorway.
The building is topped with a bold moulded cornice and a blocking course that features two finials at the raised centre, supported by small scrolls. Brick stacks are located at the right eaves.
On the left side, facing Belle Vue Terrace, there is a 1+2 windowed frontage. The left section has 16-pane sash windows set in a plain band at two levels. Between pilasters, there are paired small 4-pane windows separated by a panel that displays the name "BRITANNIA" in raised sans-serif lettering, above an arched panel with a flat shell motif and "EPCo." This section is topped with a continuous cornice and fascia above three windows and three doors, which have small-paned casements above glazed olive green wall tiling. Pilasters are present at the ends of the frontage and at the doors.
At the second-floor level on the right, there is a diamond set panel with arms above a bold raised square panel that reads "ELDRIDGE POPE & CO." The Britannia Inn remains an unaltered example of a 19th-century public house design.
