Description

The Royal Portland Arms is an inn built in the mid-19th century, possibly incorporating some earlier elements. It features ashlar stonework and slate roofs. The building has a tall, symmetrical front that aligns with the neighboring structures and includes two deep gabled wings that adapt to the sloping ground. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-windowed facade.

Above a moulded stone cornice, there are three gabled dormers with small plain sash windows set under raised copings on kneelers. On the first floor, there is a prominent oriel window with a flat roof, supported by shaped wooden brackets, featuring large plate glass sashes, a moulded cornice, and a moulded base. Flanking the oriel are two 12-pane sash windows in moulded stone architraves with cill bands.

The ground floor has large nearly square openings with plate glass and 2-pane upper lights, all within moulded stone surrounds that include small keystones. The central entrance features a panelled 19th-century door in a moulded architrave, topped by a plain transom light and accessed by two stone steps. The building has a plinth, a band at door height, an entablature, and a blocking course. Each gable is topped with a large stone chimney stack, and the roof extends prominently between and at the ends of the dormers. The overall layout and proportions suggest that the front may have been modified and raised from a design typical of the late 18th century.
