Description
Two boundary markers are located at the junction of New Road and Old Hill in Portland. These markers date from the 19th century. The marker to the northeast is built into the retaining wall, which curves around to the bottom of Old Hill. Its upper part has been defaced, but it displays the number 31, with its root or foundation also exposed. The opposite marker is a free-standing square stone with a rounded top at the end of the retaining wall to New Road. It shows the number 30 to the northeast and has an inscription to the northwest stating, "This stone removed 3'6" East." These markers are representative of various boundary markers, typically associated with Admiralty or War Department boundaries on the island. They also serve as a reminder that Old Hill was the main access route to Tophill from Underhill until New Road was constructed in 1810.
