Description

The War Memorial Clock Tower is a roughcast concrete structure built in 1931, designed by Henry Thomas. It occupies a prominent position at the edge of the town's medieval amphitheatre.

The memorial is square in plan and consists of a three-stepped base, topped by a plinth with a moulded cornice. Above this rises a plain, square shaft forming the clock tower, which terminates in a cornice leading to an upper stage featuring a clock face within simple moulding on each of its four sides. The tower is capped with a squat, arching spirelet, with a lucarne (dormer window) on each side, and a weather vane. Tablets with lead lettering are set into the plinth; the north tablet reads 'THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FROM THIS TOWN / GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918', followed by a roll of honour. The east and west sides of the plinth feature tablets inscribed 'IN MEMORIAM / WORLD WAR 1939-1945', listing the names of those who died. A low, decorative iron fence surrounds the base. The memorial contributes to the group value of the surrounding listed buildings.
