Description

The Lime Kiln, dating from the 19th century, is located on Easton Lane in Portland. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features a corrugated iron roof. The kiln is a prominent half-cylindrical structure built into the roadside bank, rising approximately 4 meters from pavement level and measuring about 3.5 meters in width. The front of the kiln has a flat plain surface over an opening with large quoins, and the hearth is set in a brick segmental vault that fills an earlier opening. The back of the kiln is semi-circular and integrated into the slope, topped with a plain stone-on-edge parapet wall. Attached to the kiln is a lean-to measuring around 10 meters in length and 1.75 meters high at the front, which has a wide trimmed opening to the kiln front and a door on the left leading to a room with a stone sett floor. Although the kiln is abandoned and in poor condition, it holds historic interest as a substantial remaining kiln on the island.
