Description
The bridge over the mineral railway at SY 6923 7324 is a late 19th-century structure located in Portland. It is constructed from heavy rock-faced squared stone and features a single segmental arch with rusticared quoins and voussoirs, supported by plain internal abutments. The lower parts of the bridge may have a plinth, but these are concealed by the raised ground level. The bridge has a heavy square-edged weathered parapet that follows the incline of the road, with a change in the angle of incline above the center of the arch. It spans approximately 15 meters in length. This bridge is one of three in alignment over the former tramway and serves as a reminder of the 19th-century industrial activity in the quarries on the island, highlighting the significance of rail and tramways in the transport system of that era.
