Description
The bridge at SY 6923 7333 is a road bridge built in 1875 that spans a former mineral railway. It is constructed from heavy rock-faced squared stone and features a single segmental arch with rusticated quoins and voussoirs supported by plain internal abutments. The lower parts of the bridge may have a plinth, but these are concealed by the raised ground level. The bridge has a heavy square-edged weathered parapet that follows the incline of the road, with a change in the angle of incline above the center of the arch. The bridge is approximately 15 meters long and is the earliest of three bridges aligned over the former tramway. The date 1875 is inscribed on the road side of the northern parapet. This bridge is significant as it serves as a reminder of the 19th-century industrial activity in the quarries on the island, when rail and tramways played a crucial role in the transport system.
